DATA COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
Completion requirements
6. Understand computer network basics.(chapter 6)
6.7. Describe the general features of LAN, MANs and WANs
Local Area Networks (LAN):
•LANs are confined to a relatively
small area such as a school or a building
•LANs usually have one computer
designated as the file server
•Other computers are connected to
the network by cables connecting network interface cards in each computer
Metropolitan-Area
Network (MAN)
•MAN
- The communication infrastructures that have been developed in and around
large cities
•A
MAN is
a large computer network that usually spans a city or a large campus.
•A
MAN usually interconnects a number of local area networks (LANs) using a
high-capacity backbone technology, such as fiber-optical links, and provides
up-link services to wide area networks (or WAN) and the Internet.
WAN(Wide Area Network)
- A Wide Area Network is a network that extends over a large geographical area such as states or countries.
- A Wide Area Network is quite bigger network than the LAN.
- A Wide Area Network is not limited to a single location, but it spans over a large geographical area through a telephone line, fibre optic cable or satellite links.
